The Monday Matters

The Monday Matters evolved from a class which started in September 2006 at the Lindisfarne Adult Education Centre in Alnwick. Our inspiration was Margaret Kenny who taught us a variety of rag rugging techniques. The aim of the classes was to achieve NVQ qualifications and ran for two years, with those attending reaching NVQ level 2 in Creative Craft in Textiles.

One of our members is Jane Jackson who has gone on to establish herself as a respected textile designer and who with Margaret runs rag rug workshops throughout the region.

The Matters meet weekly working on our individual projects and help to promote the traditional craft of rag rugging by undertaking demonstrations at various local shows including the Alnmouth Arts festival. As individuals we’ve also participated in various community projects lead by Margaret including a wall hanging for the Seahouses Development Trust and another commemorating the Battle of Flodden which hangs in the Cheviot Centre in Wooler

We’re keen to show that it’s not just rugs and wall hangings which can be created but also a variety of household and decorative items using, in the main, recycled materials.

The Monday Matters meet on Monday mornings from 9.45 until 11.45 at the Alnwick Arts and Craft Centre, 8 Bondgate Within, Alnwick, NE66 1TD and we welcome anyone who would like to join us.
